American Zombie (2007)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Interesting concept… a “documentary” of an imaginary zombie underworld in L.A.  I thought they did a pretty good job with this without being too gory like the recent zombie flicks out there.  There are some really entertaining parts, and some really dull parts, but overall worth checking out if you are into zombie movies.

The Counterfeiters (2007)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Based on a true story of a Jewish forger who ends up in a Nazi concentration camp during WWII helping them to generate counterfeit currency.  Certainly as good as some of the other recent WWII flicks, Life is Beautiful and The Pianist.  Warning for those who don’t like watching films with subtitles… this is one of those.

Doomsday (2008)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I was able to watch the Blu-ray version of the movie, which probably made it better than it was.  This was only the 2nd Blu-ray disc I’ve received from Netflix, and the stupid thing was jumpy a couple times, but man did it look good.  I suppose I can quickly sum this movie up as this… if you liked Mad Max, you’ll probably love this movie.

Deep Impact (1998)

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

Now I know why I put off watching this movie for so long.  I remember it coming out roughly the same time as Armageddon, and the reviews didn’t seem to be as good.  I decided to only watch one of the two at the time, and I certainly chose the better of the two.  The concept of saving the planet from a hurtling asteroid in the ways portrayed in the two films seem pretty dumb, but at least Armageddon was just plain fun.  This one was slightly on the depressing side, if you actually found yourself caring about the characters.

The Prince of Egypt (1998)

Rating: ★★★★☆

I actually watched this with the kids a couple years ago, so I’ll just restate what I did in my 200-character Netflix review from that time: “Better than most Disney films I’ve seen. Powerful music score, and proof that old-time animation can still look great.”  That still holds true upon a repeat viewing.

Great Fighting Machines of WWII: Axis Bombers (1993)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I should mention here that I have allocated one DVD each to J’s and Lafe’s Netflix queues, so they receive their “own” movie each week.  This was Lafe’s selection.  He’s a sponge for military aircraft data, and this documentary was a virtual encyclopedia of aircraft specs with related archival footage playing in the background.  This certainly isn’t as great for him as the Dogfights TV series, but he still soaked it up.

Final side note: I’m currently in the process of watching two other series that I will rate when complete: Smallville: Season 7 and The War: A Ken Burns Film.
