Movies 11/3-11/10

Here’s my first post of movies I’ve watched over the week.  I really don’t plan to add much detail to these other than what I’m rating them on Netflix.  Though, Netflix doesn’t allow for 1/2 stars, so these will be slightly different here.  I should note how my rating system works, as you might wonder why it’s always a bit “low.”  One star means the movie was not worth watching… i.e., I wish I had my time back.  Two stars means there’s not much exciting about it though it doesn’t mean I didn’t like it… just means I wouldn’t watch it again unless there was nothing better to do.  Three stars is an average movie… if someone invited me over to watch it, I’d sit through it again.  Four stars is a great movie… glad I watched it and would watch it again any time.  Five stars is a movie I think everyone should watch, with the caveat that they might not want to see it if they don’t like the genre.  For example, many of my 5-star movies are pre-1950s movies.  If you don’t like “old” black & white movies, stay away.  I also love Akira Kurosawa’s samurai movies with Toshiro Mifune… if you don’t like samurai, stay away. ;)  My friends sharing ratings on Netflix realize, in general, that I rate everything about one star below what they would expect.  Well, get used to it. ;)  Here are the movies I watched this week.

The Bank Job (2008)

Rating: ★★★½☆

I have really liked most Jason Statham movies I’ve seen to date, my favorite being Crank.  They are usually just plain silly, but full of great action (yes, Jake, that means explosions).  This one is somewhat different in that it’s based on a true story, which is weird for Jason… he’s kept in check too much by reality. ;)

Le Cercle Rouge (1970)

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Supposedly another French classic crime drama.  I really didn’t get it.  I tried to keep an open mind with this one, but simply became bored well before the end.  I didn’t feel much for the characters at that point either.  Oh well.  It was still Frenchie enough to enjoy, lol.

The Bionic Woman: Volume 1 (2007)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I was about to give up on this TV series after the first DVD, but it turned out fun enough by the end that I’ll keep watching if they continue with more seasons.  This is a good point, by the way, to bring up that I don’t watch TV, nor do I have cable or satellite, so everything I watch is either at other people’s houses (rarely) or through Netflix.  So, I’m always a year behind watching TV shows, which makes conversations about them difficult with most friends and coworkers, lol. :)

Stop-Loss (2008)

Rating: ★★½☆☆

I don’t know what to say about this one.  I guess I expected something else from the movie, but it’s hard to put it into words.  I can only say it was pretty average and probably wouldn’t really watch it again unless forced.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

This is the first Blu-ray movie I received from Netflix.  This is another good point to mention something else.  My only TV is the one T and I bought before we were married back in 1997… a 27″ (?) Zenith.  I watch most movies on my desktop computer’s 24″ widescreen LCD.  What a change that was for me a couple years ago, lol.  Two weeks ago, I finally bought a Blu-ray drive for the computer, so can now finally watch things in HD, woohoo!  This movie was pretty fun, and Lafe really liked it.  Not much else to say.

The Last Mimzy (2007)

Rating: ★★★½☆

I saw this almost a year ago, and thought the kids would be too scared with a couple of the parts, but finally got it again from Netflix for them to watch.  They really enjoyed it, and it’s fun enough for parents to sit through as well.

Air Bud Spikes Back (2003)

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

This movie was for J… she still loves all Air Bud movies.  I got bored very quickly, so tried to find something else to do while she watched it twice over the weekend.  Even her brother didn’t want to see it more than 0.5 times.

Unhitched (2006)

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Can someone please explain to me why almost every chick-flick has to deal with infidelity?  I’ve been looking forever for a good one T would like, but these are just too full of the stuff anymore.  :(

I finally really read the entire review. What changed about Bionic woman? I thought it was awful for the few episodes I saw…and wasn’t shocked when it was not renewed.

Also, how do you get your pictures all the same size? They always seem to be different sizes me for me.

It’s probably a case where all the poor expectations going in made it a better show for me. It was really the darker nature of the show compared w/ the original that I liked… it looked like it was eventually going to head in a cool direction. Oh well. I’ll just have to return to my favorite dark show – Battlestar Galactica. :)

As for the pics, I think they are all the same size when I download them from Netflix. If not, then I’m getting lucky by the way I add them to the posts. With WordPress, you can display a full-size pic, a medium-size pic and a thumbnail. For these, I go with a medium-size pic, then go back into edit the pic and tell it to display at 60% to make it nice and small. Works like a champ, I think.
