Movies 12/1-12/19

Ok, it’s been a while since I’ve posted.  Sorry ’bout that.  And, sorry that the first post back is just a movies update, lol.

First off, rather than have a mini-review & ratings for all the Christmas-season movies we watched, here’s a quick list.

Jack Frost

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

Charlie Brown Christmas

Santa Clause 3

Polar Express

Frosty the Snowman

The War: A Ken Burns Film (2007)

Rating: ★★★★☆

This is quite a time investment with 6 DVDs of 2.5 hours each, but it is well worth watching.  Interspersing interviews with several veterans with vintage photos and videos gives the documentary a very nice touch.  There’s some pretty no-holds-barred photos/video, so I wouldn’t watch it with a young one (I almost thought about letting Lafe watch with me, but glad I didn’t in hindsight).

Baby Mama (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Tina Fey is always quite entertaining, but she couldn’t carry this film for me.  I’m not surprised… it looked pretty dorky in previews, but it was refreshing to watch after another Ken Burns’ DVD.  Sometimes you just have to sit back and let your mind be totally dumbed down for an hour and a half.

Pathology (2008)

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

I’m going to admit here that if you like horry/thriller movies, I think you’ll really like this one.  I would compare it somewhat to Hostel, in that the scariness in the movie derives from the idea that you could really see this happening somewhere.  For me, this movie just proved that I don’t really want to watch that kind of horror movie anymore.  I’d rather watch something like Baby Mama.

The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)

Rating: ★★★★☆

This one jumped straight over to my Christmas wish list.  Outstanding fight scenes with Jackie Chan and Jet Li, as anyone should expect.  I had reservations going in, expecting to be completely annoyed by Michael Angarano, but even he ended up being a fun character to watch.  I can never really get enough of samurai flicks, but even those of you who don’t normally like them may like this one for its humor… and complete lack of subtitles! :)

Leatherheads (2007)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I still can’t stand George Clooney… I’m not sure why, but I just don’t like his “acting.”  The movie was downright fun, though.  I love throwbacks to older (pre-50s) era movies, and this one pulled it off much better than other recent attempts.

The Andromeda Strain (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Somewhat entertaining, and is a top-quality effort for a TV mini-series.  However, I enjoyed the original 1971 film much more.  This one has quite a bit of junk in it that would take too long to explain here.

Smallville: Season 7 (2007)

Rating: ★★★★☆

I think I’ve given every season of Smallville 4 stars to date.  There hasn’t really been a season I haven’t liked yet.  They all have their highs and lows, but overall are very entertaining.  Though, I understand you might lose guy points for just liking this show, as I believe Jake’s wife has mentioned more than once that it’s a teenage girls’ show, not a grown man’s.  Well, I’m still watching it.  :P

Great Fighting Machines of WWII: Allied Bombers (1993)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Another fine documentary for Lafe and his aircraft data-gathering quest.  Enough said.

Witless Protection (2008)

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

“Witless.”  Yup.  I understand there are lots of people out there entertained by Larry the Cable Guy.  I can apparently not be counted in that category.  This was just plain dumb.

    Thanks for blogging again.

I totally agree with your rating of The Forbidden Kingdom. I bet that one would be excellent in Blue Ray on the new TV.
