“I’m not sure I notice the difference.”

These were the words I heard after watching our first movie on our new Toshiba Regza 42″ LCD HDTV.  Unbelievable.  Well, anyone who knows T would probably believe it.  We don’t watch TV, but we do watch at least 1 or 2 movies each weekend as a family.  It’s been difficult for me to deal with our 15-year-old 27″ RCA boob tube after upgrading my desktop computer setup with a 24″ widescreen LCD monitor two years ago.  I simply didn’t bother watching anything on the TV anymore.  T continued to veto the idea of upgrading the family TV year after year.  Well, that changed finally.

This year, T’s mom came out of a back room during our family Christmas with what appeared to me to be a wad of cash in each hand.  She started telling both T and her sister, Lib, that she wanted to do something special with some of the money she inherited when her mom, our Granny B, passed away last year.  Granny B loved watching TV, and I remember always taking her several DVDs each year (like the Hercule Poirot series) so she had something to watch when shows weren’t that good.  Anyway, she told them she was giving them some money, but it had to go to a specific use: a new TV.  It was all I could do to keep from leaping off the couch (well, actually I can’t jump anymore, lol ;).  It was especially enjoyable for me to see the look on T’s face, as well as Lib’s… I understand her husband hasn’t been able to convince her to get a new TV either, lol.

So, we are now watching all our movies on a new TV (the old one went to the kids’ school), and they couldn’t look better.  I also picked up an Insignia Blu-ray player while I was purchasing the TV.  (It really didn’t make sense to have Blu-ray capability on my computer, but not on the family TV, right? ;)  Best Buy had a great deal to buy 10 Blu-ray discs and get the player for free, and it had good reviews from Consumer Reports, so I jumped at it.

Blu-ray movies are simply startling.  Even T followed up her original comment with “Wow, it’s much better from this angle.  Who knew?” when I popped in the 3rd Mummy movie on Blu-ray after the kids were in bed.  Maybe she’ll stop making fun of me someday.
