Movies 12/26-1/3

If you didn’t notice already, this is the second post of movies for our Christmas break.  I just posted the first a few minutes ago (scroll down).  I really need to get better at blogging more often.  Seems I’m not the only one with the problem, though. ;)

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)

Rating: ★★★★☆

Just when I figured the Mummy series might be dead, another comes out.  I think I actually tried not to enjoy the first two movies (gave them both 2 stars), mostly because I can’t take Brendan Fraser seriously after watching Encino Man back in the early 90′s.  Watching them again, I might have to admit they are closer to 3-star movies.  Anyway, this 3rd movie in the series was a great action flick.  Jet Li is always a fun person to watch in any movie, and that probably made it work this time for me (even though he’s CGI most of the time).

Curb Your Enthusiasm: Season 6 (2007)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

I’ve been enjoying this show less and less over the years.  It’s gotten to the point where there isn’t much left in the show but screaming profanities.  That can only make a show work for so long.  Though, I guess I’m still watching them.  Maybe I’ll skip future seasons if there are any.

Arrested Development: Season 3 (2005)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

It’s hard to actually tell where this show is going from one minute to the next, which is why I kept watching each season.  If you like a show full of complete misfits, with a single person showing some sign of sanity, this is the one for you.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I still remember the kids going completely bonkers during the first movie when the stupid lemurs started singing the “I like to move it move it” song.  Apparently my kids weren’t the only ones, as the movie virtually started with the lemurs doing it again.  I had a sinking feeling that I would soon see all the kids in the theater jumping up and down in their rows, but it never happened.  My favorite parts of this movie, as in the first, were any time the penguins are on screen.  I can’t get enough of those guys.  If you missed the extra short film with them on the Madagascar DVD, you need to check it out.

The Karate Kid (1984)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

We finally let the kids start watching the Karate Kid series this year.  It’s funny to watch and hear their reactions to movies I’ve seen a bazillion times as a kid.  It was especially humorous to hear them keep yelling at Miyagi for “not teaching Daniel karate!!!” while he’s doing the wax-on, wax-off thing.

Air Bud: Golden Receiver (1998)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

… and there was great rejoicing from T, me and Lafe as we completed the final film in the Air Bud series.  J still loves these, which is why we watched them all.  I swear they are all the same movie, but the ball is just swapped out through visual effects.

Great Fighting Machines of WWII: Allied and Axis Fighters (2001)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

These continue to be great movies for Lafe as he soaks up more specs on any and all wartime aircraft.  They really have some neat footage on each of these discs.  It would be nice if they could have combined several of these onto a single DVD, though.

Iron Man (2008)

Rating: ★★★★☆

This was the first movie I purchased when I added a Blu-ray drive to my desktop computer.  I enjoyed rewatching it with T for the first time last night.  It has pretty much everything I want in an action movie.  Only the ending kept it from my 5-star category.  Lafe really wants to watch it, but it’s still too intense for younger children.
