Thanks, Grandma…

Earlier this fall, Grandma Lois called up and said she’d like to take Lafe trout fishing over the weekend.  He left pretty excited, and came back… a fishing monster.  In hind-sight I didn’t immediately notice how crazily he took to fishing, but it’s oh-so-obvious now.

If you’re wondering about the picture here, thanks for asking… I’ll explain.  For about a year leading up to the weekend invite, I had been reading some of my favorite childhood books (or at least childhood books I read during adulthood) to the kids.  I’ve mainly been focusing on books that have since become movies, or will eventually make the jump.  The kids are motivated to listen to these, not only because they are good books, but because they are allowed to watch the related movie after completion.  Here was my master plan, which started when my sister-in-law gave the entire Lemony Snicket series to the kids.

  • Lemony Snicket (13-book series)
  • Chronicles of Narnia (7-book series)
  • Harry Potter (7-book series)
  • Lord of the Rings (3-book series)

So, this plan was working pretty well for some time.  We made it through all the Lemony Snicket books (and watched the first movie), through the first two Narnia books (and watched the first movie – the second will have to wait until they’re older), and then started the first Harry Potter book.  I was really excited to get going on the Harry Potter series as I loved those books, and am fairly happy with the movies.

Well, that came to a screeching halt one day.  Lafe and T hit the local Half-Price Books store one afternoon before I got home from work.  When I entered the door to the house, Lafe ran down to me holding a book saying, “Dad, Dad… check this OUT!  We HAVE to read this book next!  We are NOT reading another book until I learn everything in this one!”  Yes, it was Walleye Wisdom: An In-Fisherman Handbook of Strategies… 280 pages strong… and in very small text.

So, I say through gritted teeth and with much love, “Thanks, Grandma.”  ;)

I love to read your posts. You make me laugh. I can so hear the tone of Lafe’s voice and see the look on his face. :) Kids are funny!
