Book reviews 2/9
Lords of Light (Deepak Chopra, Martin Greenberg)
Rating:

This book and the one below were loaned to me by T’s cousin, Rae Marie. I don’t believe she’s read them yet, so I won’t give much away here. I did enjoy both of them, but they were fairly average in terms of Christian fiction. This one was more entertaining, as you felt a bit of anxiety for the main character in his situation. The one thing I liked the most about the book was that it expanded on an idea I have seen in at least one other book series. The idea is that Anti-Christ, or Satan himself, might be trying to do good in his own way… i.e., he thinks he has a better plan than God’s. However, he goes about it in horribly wrong ways, and the world is so much worse for it. This idea as it is explored makes it much more obvious how people could be willingly deceived by him in the end times.
The Angel is Near (Deepak Chopra, Martin Greenberg)

Compared to the previous book, this one did not keep me on the edge of my seat. The story simply doesn’t work as well as a thriller, especially when you are a bit familiar with the main characters. I’m really not certain where the story intended to go with the main plot line, but it seemed to just sit there in the background while the authors dealt with the more interesting spiritual content. That’s where the book made up for the lack of exciting plot. The dialogues from the angels had some good things to say, though they ultimately sided too much on a universalist side of religion for my taste.

Sounds good. I was going to wait until I finished Dark Night of the Soul and then send all three together. Hopefully, I’ll be done over the weekend. As for aunt vs. cousin, guess I never really thought about it. It’s corrected now. ;)
