There’s a light at the end of this tunnel…
T and I made the long drive out to Spencer, Iowa this weekend to hit our 5th Third Day concert. It was a tiring day, but absolutely worth the drive… these guys are our favorite Christian Rock band out there, so we’ll pretty much go anywhere within 4-5 hours of home to see them.
The opening band was Revive, and they have some great music of their own. This is the second time we’ve seen these Aussies (they opened for Third Day last year as well), and they really had the crowd going again with the few songs they played. My favorites to date include Chorus of the Saints and Power (you can hear them both on their MySpace website).
The second act was Brandon Heath, who is relatively well-known on the Christian music scene now (he won “New Artist of the Year” at the 2008 Dove Awards). My favorite song of his, which happens to be one of my favorites of all Christian music, is Give Me Your Eyes (you can listen to the song here on Youtube). The song was nominated for “Best Gospel Song” at the 2009 Grammy Awards. This song speaks well to the idea that if we could just see everyone through God’s eyes, perhaps we would have a much better perspective of everyone’s struggles and current situation, and maybe we could even love everyone as He does. What a powerful message… here’s the chorus.
Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see
Third Day themselves opened with another of my all-time favorite Christian Rock songs, Tunnel (check it out on Youtube). The song speaks well to me so many days, especially given the physical pain I live with every day. It is a very uplifting song, and even has a great beat. ;) So, they hit the ground running with this song and never really let up. Rather than spend much time playing songs off their latest album, Revelation, they hit most of their best classics throughout the night. Here’s a quick list:
Time
Rockstar
Thief – I plan to write a separate post on this someday
You Are So Good To Me
God of Wonders
Nothing Compares
Creed – simply can’t have a Third Day concert without this one
In the middle of their act, the place went dark and suddenly everyone realized the entire band moved to the back of the arena and played several songs there. Even though we were dead-center in the 4th row, it’s great to see bands do this. What’s even better is they spent the next 15-20 minutes playing requests from the crowd. The crowd was simply going crazy! They played a couple songs I had never heard before, so they must really be “oldies” (their Blackbird and Bob Dylan’s Saved). Apparently the folks who requested Savedwere at a previous concert and the guys forgot the words… so this time the folks brought them to give to the band, lol. :)
At the end of the concert, during the encore, they finally sang their instant-classic Cry Out to Jesus. They only sang the chorus, which is simply powerful enough by itself. This is one of the many things I love about Christian concerts… it’s not just rocking out to music; they always have a message (you might call it a short sermon) to say, and this time they saved it for this song and the next. The message of this song left us all with the understanding that even the biggest Christian rock stars struggle through life like the rest of us. The message with their final (and album-title) song, Revelation, was that we all need to continue praying for guidance from God. Given the message we hear… what are we going to do next with our lives? Lord…

I haven’t got a clue
Tell me should I stay here
Or do I need to move

Spencer is not a long drive. 6 hours or less is easy.
Glad you enjoyed the concert.

I thought “Love Song” from their self-titled album would make the list of old songs. It is one of my favorites. But I guess they have so many good songs they would need quite the inclusive medley to perform them all.
