Movies 4/5-4/20
Transsiberian (2008)
Rating:

I’ve been wondering if I would ever like a Woody Harrelson movie ever since his Larry Flynt movie (still not sure why I bothered w/ that one years ago). This one worked for me, probably due to him not playing as large a role as I expected. Pretty good thriller and some nice cinematography.
This Gun for Hire (1942)
Rating:

This movie proves I’m not a big Veronica Lake fan. I much prefer Lauren Bacall in these types of movies. She just doesn’t seem to have the same presence on the screen as Lauren did. Perhaps the plot isn’t as good as other detective films of the time, but I think it’s the acting that was the problem.
Batman: Gotham Knight (2008)
Rating:

Advertised as bridging the gap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but after watching it I’m not sure what the point was. Jake’s going to have to explain it to me. This was just plain boring, and maybe part of it was how close it looked to all the other anime movies out there that I don’t like.
Pineapple Express (2008)
Rating:

I’ve finally had too much Seth Rogan. I can’t really put how bad this movie is into words… so I won’t even try.
In the Valley of Elah (2006)
Rating:

Tommy Lee Jones makes this movie work. It was great to finally see him in the role he plays so well. The rest of the cast just wasn’t that strong, but it was based on a true story which can tend to hold everyone back.
Superhero Movie (2008)
Rating:

Ugh. There are some shining, laugh-out-loud moments tucked away inside, but it was certainly not worth the effort it took to sit through the rest of the movie to find them. I would note them here, but even those weren’t good enough for me to remember them a week later.
Frost/Nixon: Watergate Interviews (1977)
Rating:

Not to be confused with the 2008 movie, this DVD included Frost’s actual interview with Nixon. Frost even provides a decent introduction and some additional commentary afterwards. Worth checking out by those of us who didn’t know anything about this prior to watching the 2008 movie (that’s why I did it). I don’t think there was enough commentary, and there was a huge lack of extras, so I can’t rate it very high even though it’s interesting history.
The Punisher (2004)
Rating:

I knew going into this movie that it was going to be bad, and I was not disappointed in that regard. It was really bad. Are “superhero” movies supposed to be this depressing? At least provide the background to the character “offline.” I don’t really need to see his wife and child get run over by a car, especially after seeing all his family and friends gunned down at a party. Oh well… I had to watch this before watching the 2008 sequel. Hopefully it ends up being worth watching this first.

It was a Batman movie. I can’t possibly give anything with Batman in it less than 4 stars. That’s the explanation.
