Movies 5/9-5/29

Another few weeks of movies without remembering to rate them.  Some day I will get back to doing this once a week… or at least posting anything at all once a week. ;)

Australia (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Entertaining, but overrated.  All the aboriginal stuff became annoying soon into the movie.  I expected a more serious movie as well, due to the epic feel of the cinematography.  However, there was just too much corniness going on to rise above 2 stars.  Is this what Crocodile Dundee set in motion for the rest of time… that no movie in Australia can be remotely serious without being corny?  Oh, and what’s the deal with all the false endings?  I could have sworn the movie was over about 86min into its 165min length.  Oh, and what’s the deal with… nevermind.  This rating description is over now.  Got ya… now it’s really done.  I mean it.  (Now you know what I felt like trying to make it through the “2nd half”.)  Reminds me of The Dark Knight.  Yeh, now I’m done.  “Somewheeerrre… over the rainbowwww…”  Man, I need to stop.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.0 (2007)

Rating: ★★★★★

Speaking of “serious,” here’s a show that continues to hold my attention.  Unbelievably well done sci-fi.  Can’t wait for the release of the 2nd half of the season, or for the new prequel show, Caprica.  I own all the seasons of Galactica, so let me know if you want to start the journey… it’s well worth it.

Big Bang Theory: Season 1 (2007)

Rating: ★★★★★

In contrast to the past two ratings (among others), this show proves without a doubt that I don’t always have to watch something “serious.”  This is absolutely hilarious.  I couldn’t stop watching the entire series straight through after the first episode (luckily all three DVDs arrived from Netflix on the same day ;).  The interplay between the “nerds” and the “girl next door” is so well done.  Can’t wait to see the next season.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Not an outright horrible reproduction of the original 1951 flick (which should be seen by all sci-fi fans), but nowhere near good either.  Thank you again Hollywood for taking a 1950s message that might actually still work today, and twisting it into another advertisement for Al Gore.

Frost/Nixon (2008)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I’m really glad I watched the actual interviews on DVD prior to seeing this reproduction of them.  Pretty fascinating to watch both somewhat back-to-back.  Amazing how well they matched the real interviews, and Frank Langella was knockout in his role as Nixon.

High School Musical (2006)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

This is great stuff for a little girl in your house who sings everywhere she goes.  It’s not so good for the scifi-crazed little (or big) boys in your house.  I’m so excited there are still two more of these in J’s Netflix queue.  Woohoo!

One, Two, Three (1961)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Very fun, farcical, anti-commie flick from the early 60s.  I don’t watch Cagney films enough any more.  I gotta stop watching all this recent crap out of Hollywood and get back to the good ole days of film.

Punisher: War Zone (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Not as horrible as the first film, but still maintained some of the original stench.  I guess we can’t have every superhero/antihero movie how we want it.

The Spirit (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

I saw the previews for this and expected, at a minimum, another Sin City.  Boy, was I wrong.  This was nearly as boring and lacking as Punisher: War Zone.  I finally stopped paying close attention about half-way through, and don’t feel at all bad about it.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

This turned out far better than I expected.  If, like me, you liked the first film in the “trilogy,” but didn’t enjoy the second as much, then this should still work for you.  If you liked the first two, then you simply can’t miss this prequel in the series.  Michael Sheen was outstanding in his role as the lead Lycan.

The Vikings (1958)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I was a bit bored one night and watched this online through Netflix’s Instant Viewing feature.  Kirk Douglas pulled off another epic adventure movie here, though his Spartacus is still my favorite.

I’m glad you liked Big Bang Theory. That’s one of our absolute favorites and the first thing that went into our Netflix queue after starting our free month trial on Monday. We’ve been watching them on CBS broadcast (taped via VCR, when we remember to turn on the DTV converter box), but we missed a few and every episode is pure gold so watching them again is still a blast. Enjoy the series; knowing your movie-watching habits, you’ll quite likely get through it before we do. ;)
