Stardate 653… er… Reboot

I hit two movies in the theater last Friday, and never got around to posting about them.  I kept trying to think of something clever to say, and also some way to justify my rating of Star Trek without providing too many spoilers.  Well, I give up… and don’t worry, I’ll try not to throw any spoilers out here.  There might be some in the comments later if I decide I have to justify myself.

Star Trek (2009)

Rating: ★★★★★

I have been battling for a week now whether this deserved 4 or 5 stars.  I’m finally settling on 5, since I’m finding it very difficult to not hit the movie again tomorrow night with Jake, even with the insane theater prices.  I love how the campiness of the original series’ characters remains in the movie, even though they are “different.”  No other movie series has the ability (i.e., available plot devices) to pull off a reboot in the way this movie does.  This movie shines on a different level compared to other recent reboots (Batman Begins and Casino Royale).  Add another one to the list of reboots that get you excited about series you worried might finally be dead.  This is a must see.  And for you trekkies out there who don’t like it for whatever reason, I say get over it.  I’ve spent way too much time watching almost every episode in the entire Star Trek space-time continuum, and I love what they’ve done to revive a potentially dying series.  If you need more reasons I think you’re wrong, including spoilers, then I can type them in some day.  At least we’ve seen the end of the odd-movie curse.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I can’t say I loved this movie.  I was going to title part of this post after my initial reaction to the movie, “Claws with Flaws,” but couldn’t think of a similar thing to say about Star Trek.  Who did the CGI for this movie?  They completely screwed up his adamantium version of the claws.  How did the previous flicks make them look so natural, yet this missed the mark by so far?  As for the rest of the movie, it was certainly entertaining.  I would have to place it 3rd in my ranking of the 4 X-Men movies.  The one thing I will never let go from this movie… the adamantium bullets.  Aside from the stupidity of that concept, how many movies will continue to include this cliched briefcase containing the super-weapon to defeat the super-entity and it contains hardly any ammunition or looks like a gun out of the 1950′s, only nicely polished?  Gah.
