The Wrestler (2008)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I haven’t seen Milk (nor do I plan to), so I can not confirm nor deny that Mickey Rourke was robbed of an Oscar this year.  However, I can say he did a tremendous job in this movie.  It’s not a complete knockout movie, but it’s so well done it feels like a documentary.  Mickey fits the role very well.

Rescue Dawn (2006)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Interesting telling of the real life escape of Dieter Dengler from a Laotian prison camp near the Ho Chi Minh trail.  It gets pretty long leading up to the escape, and then takes even longer after that to finally finish.  I haven’t really found a movie like this I didn’t like (yet).

Battle of the Bulge (1965)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Another fine WWII movie from the 60s, though I prefer several others more than this one.  I immediately recognized the lead German colonel (Robert Shaw) as the main bad dude from one of my favorite Bond movies, From Russia with Love.  He completely steals the show from Henry Fonda.  I didn’t realize quite how many movies I’ve seen him in until I looked him up on IMDB.

The Tunnel (2001)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Speaking of “escape” movies, here’s another well-done one.  This time we have folks attempting escape from East Berlin back in the 60s.  The scenes in the tunnel itself are pretty impressive… most of them got my claustrophobia going good.

The Bad Seed (1956)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Ok… no more piggy-tails for J.  I’m not sure I’ll be able to take her sweet looks anymore without thinking about Rhoda, the evil little girl in the movie.  One Netflix reviewer said the mom acted quite a bit like William Shatner playing Kirk, throwing herself all over the scene, pausing between lines, etc.  He was spot on, lol.

The Razor’s Edge (1946)

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

It appears I had this in my queue because someone won best supporting actress for her role.  I pretty much quit watching it half-way through.  Boring.

Women in Love (1969)

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

Obviously I need to rethink my criteria for adding something to my queue.  This one was due to the lead actress winning an Academy Award.  What the h-e-double-hockey-sticks was with the men grappling like ancient Grecian wrestlers in the middle of the movie?  Eek.

The Last King of Scotland (2006)

Rating: ★★★☆☆

At least this one, added to my queue due to Forest Whitaker’s award-winning performance, paid off.  Wow, did he play a freaky guy… and play him well.  Interesting movie, though I couldn’t find much information online explaining how much was really “true.”

The Tale of Despereaux (2008)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

I’m not big on rodent movies.  The rats certainly looked nastier in this one compared with American Tail or the recent Ratatouille.  The kids seemed entertained enough, but T and I certainly weren’t excited about it.
