A shirt made just for me
So I was checking my favorite board-game-deal-each-night website, Tanga.com, several days ago, and their T-shirt that night was perfect. Here it is:
In case you have poor eyesight and can’t read that, it says… Actually, you shouldn’t be reading this blog in that case. My text here is almost that small. Get some glasses. But, I digress.
Anyway, I immediately thought several things:
- That shirt is awesome.
- I should buy it and wear it next time I leave the Bat Cave.
- Jake needs one, too.
- I’ll bet I lose even more readers with my upcoming, random post on Israel.
Well, I didn’t buy the shirt, but looking back on it perhaps I should still grab one. Now that I return to the website, I see I never read the great description of the shirt:
Is this shirt a way to outwardly show grief over your vastly unappreciated blog, or is it a segue into the “Oh, you have a blog? What’s the URL?” conversation? There is nothing wrong with trolling for new readers. If you’re not advertising, how are you going to convince the world that your opinion is the one to copy?
Classic. :)
So, I got to thinking more about this tonight, and continue to realize something. I always expect angels to sing to people with posts like my previous one; for people to become more enlightened; or at least for people to point out to me how completely wrong I am about something. I’m always surprised by the limited response. I believe Jake has noticed quite the same thing over in his neck of the woods.
But, does this stop us from blogging? Ultimately, I have to remember it’s just a man diary. If you happen to get anything out of peeking at it, great. If you don’t, I’m cool with that. Do I need comments to keep me going? Well, that would be fun, but it’s not necessary. (This feels like the shameless self-promotion in the shirt description, of course. ;)
Anyone wonder if I can tie this all back to Scripture? Well, I’m going to give it a parting shot here.
22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison). 25 Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John 3:22-30 (ESV)
This may sound a bit superficial, but this is how I realize I have to think of this corner of the internet. I would like to make profound statements that bring everyone closer in their relationship with God (or TO a relationship, for that matter). I would like to do that daily here. I would like to have many readers. I would like to feel I’m doing something to further God’s Kingdom. John the Baptist understood the ministry now belonged to Jesus, and yet he continued playing his role – however minor or however dwindling that role may be. Am I comparing myself with John the Baptist? No way. But I’m going to take a pointer from him. Even though I can’t do or have all those things, I’ll just keep blogging away whether or not anyone is reading. ;)

Since you didn’t get the T-shirt maybe you could get the bumper sticker or coffee cup instead…

Jeff, I had to chuckle as I was reading your “ramblings” and “shameless self-promotion.” My chuckling quickly came to an end when I came across your verse. I have been pondering “He must increase but I must decrease.” (John 3:30, NKJV) I understand it, but do I get it? Couple that with a meesage I heard this week where the preacher reminded us that God is more concerned with who I am than what I do. Thanxx for the meditation of the day. Now, how do I work that into a sermon?

@Jake – you keep going too, even if your liberal friend won’t comment on your political posts, I think they’re always spot-on.
@mediocre coffee – they have bumper stickers? sweet!
@David – I actually pulled that thought from an old study on John. If you’re really going to turn it into a sermon, there were some other thoughts here from my old notes.
1) Numbers 11:23-29, 12:3 – where Moses shows humility when some were gifted with the Spirit (seemingly randomly) and everyone else was jealous.
2) What was John’s full reponse?
(a) v27 – he acknowledged God’s sovereignty in both faith and in vocation (cf. John 15:16)
(b) v28 – he restated his position relative to Christ (cf. Romans 12:3)
(c) v29 – he compares himself to a bridegroom’s servant
(d) he shows full acceptance of both his current role and his destiny (with humility) (cf. Moses)
3) What can we do to be humble/selfless? (from what John & Moses show us)
(a) focus on the person of Jesus Christ; not ourselves
(b) focus on my calling as His servant (cf. Luke 17:5-10)
I think Luke is a winner there… don’t do this all expecting anything. It’s only our duty.

What’s a blog and why do I keep getting long emails from this Nuke guy?

I love your blog… I don’t always post replies (yours too, Jake). But, I know the feeling… ha, I’ve had mine for over three years and I think am sure I have way less comments than I do posts… but I love it and keep on doing it! :)

“man diary” – *snort*
more like, “nerd diary”. At least from my perspective anyway. ;)
